As you will be aware, during the Spring Term, Newport High received confirmation that a Dragons Region Junior Rugby Academy will start at the school in September 2012.This is a joint initiative with the Welsh Rugby Union Rugby Development team.
We are thrilled to announce that David Flanagan joins the Junior Academy coaching team. Prior to his appointment, David was a professional rugby player at Ospreys Rugby and worked as backs coach with Ospreys under 18’s, Osprey’s Women and Bridgend Under 18’s districts. He has played professionally for 9 years and has also represented Cardiff Blues, Wales at under 16’s, under 19’s, under 21’s and Wales Sevens.
David’s appointment means that our high quality provision is secured following Wayne Jones’ departure as a result of personal health problems. We send Wayne our best wishes and look forward to his working with us in the future.
Newport RFC have also agreed to join the partnership and will support the initiative by providing specialist coaching and conditioning support. The link with Newport RFC also creates a pathway for players with potential into the Welsh Premiership.
Newport RFC Head Coach Sven Cronk said, “We are extremely excited with this new partnership and see it as a great vehicle for developing young talent. We are fully committed in providing young players with the opportunity to develop and are looking forward to seeing them integrate into Premiership rugby”.

Last week we hosted the Italian Ladies Rugby Team as they prepared for their Match at the Millenium Stadium against the Welsh Ladies. They had a couple of training sessions and were very impressed with our facilities. They lost their game against our ladies following the men’s game on Saturday, but we would like to wish them all the best for the future.
